Tawang valley has Tawang Monastery, which is one of the most visited and spiritual places. That is the Tawang monastery which is also one of the largest monasteries in India and the second largest in the world situated in the Tawang town. It is nestled in the eastern Himalayas.
The beauty of the Monastery, which looks like a fort from a little far, will automatically attract you. Due to this, we don’t have to convince you to visit this place once you are in Tawang. Tawang Monastery is known in the Tibetan language as Gaden Namgyal Lhatse.
Tawang Monastery is famous for 16th-century architecture. Some of the famous things to look forward to at Tawang Monastery are sketches and paintings of Bodhisattvas, a silver silk casket dedicated to Goddess Shri Devi, and many other works of art.
Merak Lama Lodre Gyamtso founded the Tawang Monastery in 1680-81. It holds great historical significance. Most of the population in and en route to Tawang are Monpa (Buddhist people), who historically had their closest links with Tibet.
One can enter the Tawang monastery from its northern side through the gate ‘Kakaling’, a hut-like structure with walls made of stone. Painted with Mandalas on the ceiling, it has painted pictures of Saints and divinities on the inside walls. The walls and the ceiling looks stunning with bright colours, mostly in shades of yellow and red.

1. Tawang War Memorial
Wars are never good. It is always a defense action and thankfully India has not fought many. Hence, India does not have many War Memorials around the country.
As we know by the name War memorial, this was built in the memory of all the martyrs who lost their lives battling the enemies during the 1962 China-Indian War. A 40 feet colorful structure, the War Memorial is dedicated to all the martyrs of this war.
Situated at a distance of 25 kilometers from Tawang city, Tawang War Memorial is a wonderful spot among places to visit in Tawang to cherish some patriotic fervor in Tawang valley. This memorial has the names of 2140 Indian soldiers who laid their lives for the country.

2. Gorichen Peak

With a distance of 164 km away from Tawang city, Gorichen peak is situated at an altitude of 22,500 feet above sea level. It is the highest peak in Arunachal Pradesh and it is located between. Tawang and West Kameng districts.
You can explore activities like mountain climbing here. You can get a glimpse of this peak on a clear day when you are traveling from Bomdila towards Tawang.
Gorichen Peak is one of the top tourist attractions in Tawang and is also a sacred site of the Monpa tribe. They believe that this peak protects them from all harm, hence it is sacred to them.
3. Nuranang Falls
One thing that always attracts people from all phases of life is magnificent waterfalls. It’s an awesome feeling to not hear anything but gushing water, smell nothing but cold water and feel the mist on your hand. Obviously, the majority of us do not feel it every day.
Untouched by the larger part of tourists, many believe that it is one of the most fascinating waterfalls in India. Undoubtedly, Nuranang Falls is one of the hidden gems of Tawang valley.
The spectacular Nuranang waterfalls descend from a height of about 100 meters. Nuranang waterfalls originate at Sela Pass.

The pass got its name after a tribal woman Sela. She braved all odds to provide food and water to this valiant soldier and killed herself upon witnessing his death. Legend said that Jaswant Singh Rawat an Indian army soldier lost his life fighting the enemies in this venue in the Sino-Indian war in 1962.
Covering an area with snow throughout the year, Sela pass offers the scenic beauty of the mighty Himalayas. Being a popular tourist attraction, the place is also famous for being a prominent religious site for Buddhist’s spiritual activities.
Sela pass lies on your way to Tawang city which is some 80 km from the pass and does make a great place to stop and relax, admiring the awesomeness of the surroundings.
There’s not a lot of passes in India, so this is a must visit place.
5. Shonga-Tser Lake
Lakes are love. Being located in the Himalayan region, the state of Arunachal Pradesh is home to many beautiful valleys, lakes, and spiritual sites.
But this lake is also popular in our Bollywood industry. Yes, we are talking about Shonga-Tser lake better known as Madhuri Lake.
The lake is known for offering panoramic views of the landscape. It has been quite a popular tourist spot with wonderful scenic beauty. Shonga-Tser lake- a breathtaking combination of rocky mountains and an ever-present lake whose beauty is beyond spellbinding.
Located 42kms from Tawang, this beautiful lake was formed as a result of an earthquake in 1971, which is filled with clear waters and surrounded by snow-capped mountains.
The Shonga-Tser or Madhuri Lake has an altitude of 12,000 ft above sea level. Just 30 km north-east of Tawang city, it is a sight to behold. It is tucked between huge mountains in the heart of the Himalayas with many upright tree trunks standing in its belly as if guarding the lake. Madhuri Lake is full of nature that amazes you, dazzles you, and rejuvenates your soul.
