Mughal dynasty ruled over India during the 16th to 18th century. The Mughal emperor Shahjahan ruled northern India from 1628 to 1658. He built the Taj Mahal in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal.
He fell in love with her when he was 16 and she was 14. Mumtaz Mahal died during giving birth to his 14th son at the age of 37. So the grieving emperor ordered to build the most beautiful tomb ever. So, in this way, the Taj Mahal was commissioned in the year 1632 which then took 20 years to complete. It also took 20,000 laborers and 1000 elephants to bring this marvelous piece of art to life. Chief architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori was the supervisor of this project.
It is interesting to note that Shahjahan’s own son Aurangzeb, from his wife Mumtaj Mahal, conspired against him to sit on the throne. So, Aurnagzeb threw Shahjahan in prison in poor conditions. And because of the ill treatment and negligience in prison Shahjahan died. Aurangzeb burried his father at the same place as his mother- i.e at Taj Mahal. Due to this Taj Mahal also became the tomb of Shahjahan himself. Aurangzeb became the new mughal emperor.
Due to its mesmerizing beauty and legendary history, it became the symbol of eternal love. (source: History.com)
